I had a tooth that needed a root canal treatment. I am not a good dental patient and only go when absolutely necessary. He did the root canal but I was supposed to go back to get the crown. I will admit it was stupid for me not to. Since then, the tooth has decayed to the point where it is half gone. Now the tooth is infected again and I am in massive pain. A friend suggested their dentist to me. I went and he confirmed the infection and said that an extraction is really my only option at this point. He also told me it is going to be quite invasive and gave me the option of having it done using a local with him or under anesthesia with an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon is massively expensive. Am I unsafe by going the cheaper route? I’m assuming this will be massively painful so I’m just planning on getting drunk afterward.

Dear Oliver,
Put away the rum. I have a solution for you. You will not need an oral surgeon for a tooth extraction. However, it is possible you will have to go to a different dentist. Sometimes when a dentist tries to offer an alternative to himself it actually means they are not comfortable doing the procedure because it is more advanced than his current experience. You do not want a dentist who gets in over his head. I would simply ask him to be forthright with you. Ask him if he has done extractions like yours in the past. If so, how many? That should give you some idea of his comfort level.
Whether you go to this dentist or a different one, I want you to make certain they offer dental sedation options. With your level of dental anxiety, along with the nature of your procedure, I would like you to use oral conscious sedation. This is administered by a pill. However, this pill is super strong. So strong, that you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment as well as stay with you for a few hours after the procedure until you are lucid and steady on your feet.
You will find that not only will you be so relaxed that you can even sleep through the procedure, but it will revolutionize the way you feel about the dentist.
